Friends can be colleagues, peers, classmates, even a stranger with a kindly gesture or act whom you never see again, for a friend can be an acquaintance. But the biggest and best friends often times are our spouses, children, parents, and grandparents, as well as other relations.

A friend can be someone you know, like, or trust, but the biggest and best friends are those who we build a lasting, solid bond with or those who we are allied in a struggle or cause, a comrade in arms raising children, supporting spouses, brother, sister, mother, father. These are truly people who support or sympathize with us and we with them.

If we look at the etymology of the word friend, we find that it means lover, literally. The relationship between Latin am cus "friend" and am "I love" is clear, as is the relationship between Greek philos "friends" and phile "I love." The Germanic root behind this berb is * fr -, which menat "to like, love, be friendly to." Closely linked to these concepts is that of "peace," and in fact Germanic made a noun from this root, * frithu-, meaning exactly that. Ultimately descended from this noun are the personal names Frederick, "peaceful ruler," and Siegfried, "victory peace." The root also shows up in the name of the Germanic diety Frigg, the goddess of love, who lives on today in the word Friday, "day of Frigg," from an ancient translation of Latin Veneris di s, "day of Venus."

As friends, we are lovers, peacemakers, victors of the vanquished heart, advocates of storm trodden lives, promoter of all things emotional torn asunder. We are there in the middle of the night, travelers to the far reaches of the earth, relinquishers of the selfish and self-serving at the behest of our lovers, our givers, our receivers of us, our advocates, our friends.

Enjoy.

Excellent article Jeff. I particularly like these two lines: "A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."-- Walter Winchell "A friend is one who knows us, but loves us anyway."-- Fr. Jerome Cummings I have a friend who literally saved my life. She's always late, totally unreliable but when I needed her the most, she came through!
